About the Instructor, Ojeya Cruz Banks
Ojeya Cruz Banks is a dancer/anthropologist, who is a doctoral student in the Language, Reading and Culture department at the University of Arizona. She has studied with renowned dancers such as Katherine Dunham, Ron Brown, Moustapha Bangoura and Eno Washington. She has studied dance abroad in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Mali, Guinea and Cuba. Her research interests are dance anthropology, dance pedagogy, contemporary fusion technique, choreography and Africa. For three years, Ojeya worked as the artistic director of the Dambe Project, an organization that specializes in African performing arts education. She also worked as a dancer, instructor and choreographer for the ZUZI DANCE COMPANY in Tucson, Arizona. She recently relocated to Michigan to teach dance.

As a preview of his company's upcoming season, Peter Sparling will answer the question what is modern dance? with discussion, video, and movement. Topics include a primer on how to view modern dance as well as a glimpse inside the mind of a choreographer and dancer. Sparling draws from diverse sources of inspiration including literature, visual arts, and industry and will share the process of creating a dance from the outside world. A highlight of the evening will be a sneak preview of the 2nd Annual Peter Sparling Dance Company Home Season March 22-25 at Dance Gallery Studio.

What:
Dancers from the Peter Sparling Dance Company and Dance Gallery Youth and Adult Ensembles will perform with the Phoenix Ensemble in a creative project that celebrates great American composer, Charles Ives.
Who:
Charles Ives was the first true American collagist and sampler. He boldly took disparate musical and literary materials from the culture around him and placed them within the rigorous traditions of classical music.

The Charles Ives American Music Festival combines the artistic vision of professional musicians and dancers. Sparling will debut three new works: From the Steeples and the Mountains and Hawthorne danced to the music of Charles Ives played live by the Phoenix Ensemble, and including Dance Gallery Youth and Adult Ensembles. Robin Wilson performs solo to Duke Ellingtons Come, Sunday, choreographed by Wilson and Peter Sparling.
Cost:
Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students for each concert.

Music and dance in our country need no Americanization thanks to the outstanding contributions of 20th century maverick artists such as Charles Ives, Martha Graham, Aaron Copland, and many more, states Sparling. Having trained as a musician for many years, I find it a real joy to work closely with some of our town's best and most adventurous musicians for the Ives Festival. We are in agreement that music and dance do not need to illustrate each other; rather they grow from the same source and illuminate aspects that might be more difficult to detect left in their isolated realms. They can also reveal much about the American spirit: always ready to explore new territories, and bridge past with present. We are also eager to join forces again, join our audiences and make Ann Arbor a hotbed for grassroots collaborations of all kinds.

Adult Ensemble Audition
Open to all ages and levels, Dance Gallery Studio is holding auditions for their adult dancer ensemble. The ensemble will be taught by Peter Sparling Dance Company Member Holly Hobbs.
Ensemble dancers will attend weekly rehearsals and take part in local community performances such as EMU Community Dance Day, March 31 and the Dance Gallery Studio Spring Showcase, May 11 12.
For the audition, wear comfortable clothing to move in with bare feet. Rehearsals will be Saturdays from 12:30 2:30 pm.

Pre-Professional Training Program Placement Intensive This week-long intensive is for all returning and new PTP students. Students will take a technique class daily, followed by repertoire. Members of the Ensemble will experience the expertise of internationally respected choreographer Peter Sparling and Peter Sparling Dance Company members in both classical and contemporary styles.
