“Music and dance in our country need no ‘Americanization’ thanks to the outstanding contributions of 20th century maverick artists such as Charles Ives, Martha Graham, Aaron Copland, and many more,” states Sparling. “Having trained as a musician for many years, I find it a real joy to work closely with some of our town's best and most adventurous musicians for the Ives Festival. We are in agreement that music and dance do not need to illustrate each other; rather they grow from the same source and illuminate aspects that might be more difficult to detect left in their isolated realms. They can also reveal much about the American spirit: always ready to explore new territories, and bridge past with present. We are also eager to join forces again, join our audiences and make Ann Arbor a hotbed for grassroots collaborations of all kinds.”

Ever See a Dance in a Renovated Ball Bearing Factory?

Enjoy the famous, Peter Sparling Dance Company’s First Annual Home Season, March 16-18th, 8:00 p.m., at Ann Arbor’s newly-renovated dance space, Dance Gallery Studio, 815 Wildt Street

What:
For the first time ever, the internationally-known Peter Sparling Dance Company (PSDC) will present its annual season at Dance Gallery Studio. This is PSDC’s home — a converted ball bearing factory that is now a unique and exciting dance space on Ann Arbor’s North Main Corridor! Don’t miss this unique experience!

Enjoy the World Premiere of Nacht und Traume
The season features the premiere of Nacht und Traume, a dance for six men to a set of six Schubert songs. This turbulent, emotionally charged work – made to fit the unadorned, industrial interior of the studio and a constantly changing configuration of three Navy surplus bunk beds – features passionate portrayals of confinement contrasting with dream-like flights of escape. Four talented men from the University of Michigan Dance Department join PSDC members Michael Woodberry-Means and Matt Farmer to create a powerful cast.

Experience the World Premiere of the Videodance Work, Babel
The world premiere of Sparling's new videodance, Babel, introduces local audiences to his explorations of dance made specifically for the video screen. Mirroring the voices of Arvo Part’s musical score with four danced personae, (all danced by Sparling), Babel charts a man’s struggle to mediate his own metamorphosis. Featuring austere, formal framings of the white-clad figures against a black backdrop the work highlights Sparling’s expressive powers while creating a Beckettian portrait that is both visually and viscerally spellbinding.

Other Great Choreography Not to Be Missed!
Enjoy the PSDC women reprise several works first shown at the Charles Ives Festival in February 2006. Ives’ scores set to dance include the songs “Sunrise,” “The Cage” and “The Alcotts” from the Piano Sonata No. 2 “Concord, Mass., 1840-1860.”

When:
March 16-18, 2006 at 8:00 p.m.

The first, true American collagist and sampler, Ives boldly took disparate musical and literary materials from the culture around him and placed them within the rigorous traditions of classical music. It is common today for serious artists to quote or borrow from popular culture, but this was revolutionary and deemed rather eccentric in Ives's own time. Ives’s music gives us a provocative glimpse into America’s complex musical and cultural psyche. Ives believed in the democratic well-being of humankind and carried that belief into an innovative career in life insurance. Like the American poet Wallace Stevens, he kept up a professional life and created “on the side.” He was probably the most famous, and definitely the coolest, life insurance executive of all time.

All the State is a Stage...

Peter Sparling Dance Company brings "Peninsula" to several Michigan Communities.

Peter Sparling Dance Company will tour "Peninsula", a multi-media trilogy and danced travelogue of the state of Michigan for their 2004-2005 Season. Three years in the making and encompassing sites across the entire state-from Sleeping Bear Dunes to the UP copper mines to the Ford Rouge Plant--the work features a panoramic videotape backdrop and narration by Peter Sparling and music by Frank Pahl. Sparling's six dancers provide an overlay of "live" performance while their videotaped images at various sites throughout the state are projected on the screen behind them. Archival footage of the auto and mining industries contrasts with present-day settings to create a portrait of the enormous historical, cultural and environmental changes characterizing the state--and a reaffirmation of its hopes for regeneration of human and natural resources.

"Part I: From Rust and Ruin" opens with the clamor and automated rhythms of life in the assembly plant. Individual dancers perform sharply etched movement portraits of a random sampling of workers on a typical line. Behind them appear full-screen images--often including themselves-of automated machinery, the mammoth interiors of the plants, the slow motion pouring of molten steel, or a montage of grinning grilles from a century of Detroit-made automobiles, or a juxtaposition of archival photos of mid-century factories (including Albert Kahn's original drawings for the Rouge Glass Factory) with the latest technology.

"Part II: Crossing the 45th Parallel" is structured as a travelogue without words in five episodes, tracing a journey between five Michigan locations strung along the 45th Parallel: Hartwick Pines State Forest and four sites along the Leelanau Peninsula, including a lighthouse, a one-room schoolhouse, a small airport, and Sleeping Bear Dunes.

"Part III: Sounding the Glacier" mines the remote reaches of the Upper Peninsula and the loneliness of abandoned mining towns, ending at the Dreamland Hotel. A line of dancers wends its way across the stage as if tunneling into a copper mine while piles of pennies spill from old wagons, suitcases and trunks. Videotaped images of dancers in the Quincy Mine Shaft or within the charcoal kiln at Fayette Historical Site evoke the isolation, scale and architecture of those sites and the human responses to the conditions existing today as well as their historical contexts.

Generous Guru

"Would fifty thousand dollars help?"

Inside Ann Arbor Fund Raising Article

Ann Arbor Observer, August 2003

The question caught Peter Sparling off guard. For six months, Sparling's studio and dance company had been trying to raise $200,000 to move from the soon-to-be-demolished Technology Center on Third Street to a converted factory on Wildt. But when Sparling stopped to see Rodolf Arnheim after getting back from a trip to New York in June, a major gift was the last thing on his mind. The two men have been friends for twelve years, and Sparling describes the retired U-M psychology of art professor as "my guru." He says that Arnheim's theories on art and perception gave him "the guidelines toward a way of looking at my own work."

But as Sparling described his dreams for his new studio, the intellectual guru revealed another side: the $50,000 Arnheim offered would cover three-forths of the $65,000 still to be raised for the move. The dancer admits his first reaction was that his friend--who is ninety-nine and lives in Glacier Hills--might finally be losing his judgment. "We are taking donations starting at twenty-five dollars, "Sparling responded cautiously. But Arnheim insisted on the larger amount. (The studio is still working on raising on the last $15,000.)

The nonprofit studio and company moved in July, shortly before demolition started on the Tech Center. The new space, airy and wide-windowed, has room for faculty and administrative offices, a reception area, dressing rooms, and extra office space to sublet, as well as a pair of dance studios. The smaller one will be used by Ruth Leney-Midkiff for her growing youth program. The larger studio, which has room for classes of thirty-five students, is now officially the Rudi Arnheim Studio.

Many of the other artists who left the Technology Center are moving to cheaper space in Ypsilanti. Sparling admits that he was tempted to join them. He decided against it, he says, because he wants "to preserve the vitality of the independent artist in Ann Arbor. We are taking a stand and staying here."

New digs for Dance Gallery

Former factory on Wildt Street has plenty of space for classes and Peter Sparling Dance Company's rehearsals

By Susan Isaacs Nisbett
Ann Arbor News Special Writer, May 2003

Next week's Peter Sparling Dance Company performances take viewers on trips to Paris and through Michigan. But there's another voyage coming up, too, for this modern dance company affiliated with the not-for-profit Dance Gallery Studio: a July 1 trip to new studio space north of its current location in the Technology Center, due for demolition to make way for a new Ann Arbor Y.

The Dance Gallery has signed a 10-year lease with Metro Properties for former ball bearing factory at 815 Wildt St., just north of Summit Street and a block west of Main Street. The building offers approximately 5,800 square feet of space: enough for two studios to house classes and rehearsals, plus office space and another space Dance Gallery can sublet to a dance-friendly business, says Sparling. The lease includes an option for a 10-year renewal and first rights of refusal if the building comes up for sale.

Though the move was necessity, it also represents a step up for Dance Gallery. With two studios rather than one, the organization can expand its rapidly growing youth dance class program, headed by Ruth Leney-Midkiff, and add more classes for adults.

This winter, Sparling, Dance Gallery Executive Director Susan Byrnes and the Dance Gallery board have been hard at work garnering major financial pledges toward the move. Now they will begin the effort to garner smaller pledges that will take them to their goal. "The Question before us February 1 was whether we could raise the $200,000 to make the move possible," says Sparling. "Now that we are at 60 percent of that goal, we are ready to launch phase two of out fund-raising campaign, to secure the short and long-term life of the organization. We hope the community will come out and support us."

After June 30, when Dance Gallery must be out of its current space, classes will likely go on hiatus till fall, save for some possible August dance workshops, if all is ready. Architects Design Group and Beal Construction are on hand to aid in the building's transformation from factory to studio.

"We will have to order new sprung floors and build out mirrors and barres, develop new programs and hire extra staff," says Sparling, who is excited about the new 48-by-61 foot main studio, with its ranks of windows on east and west. "And of course, we need to cover the rent differential for the first 18 months in the space, until we can break even by expanding our program of classes in the new space."

Serving the community for over 20 years with quality instruction and dance performances for all ages -- beginners through professionals -- in a safe nurturing environment.
